The Stricto Sensu Graduate Program – Academic Master’s in Biotechnology at UFT was officially established in July 2011, being recommended by CAPES with a rating of 03 for the Master’s level. This program is the only graduate course offering a Master’s degree in Biotechnology for the entire state of Tocantins, as well as for most of the Northern Region of Brazil.

Biotechnology is generally understood as an integrative activity that combines various fields of knowledge involving the use of biological agents (living organisms or products derived from them) to obtain and transform products into goods and services or to solve problems. More directly, it can be understood as the application of science in the study, control, and modification of living beings with the aim of producing goods or altering biological processes for commercial purposes. Adaptations to agroindustrial production processes, which were previously restricted to the industry, now receive support from new knowledge in molecular biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, among other specialties. This intervention occurs throughout the production cycle; for example, advances in biological control through genetic manipulation. Although this procedure has its limits, industrial activity and its protection complex (patent registrations, monopoly, industrial secrecy) persist in transforming agricultural production methods up to the final product. The flexibility and diversity in the use of various techniques and the utilization of machinery and equipment have significantly increased the artificial world, highlighting its ontological and political importance when considering the social impacts of technoscientific innovations in agroindustry.

The importance of another Master’s program for the Northern Region and, particularly, for the state of Tocantins stands out, which is geographically distant from other universities offering graduate-level Master’s programs in Biotechnology in the region. The program has trained masters focused on bioprospecting and the development of bioprocesses and bioproducts, genomic and proteomic prospecting, as well as providing experience in plant biotechnology, agroindustry and biodiversity, agro-food biotechnology, and human and animal health. It has offered students a theoretical and practical foundation in biomolecular sciences as well as bioprocess technologies, alongside regulatory frameworks in bioprospecting and bio-businesses, enabling them to conduct research, create and disseminate information, and generate innovations based on microorganisms, plants, and agro-industrial residues.
